A story that dates back to before the hero

"Porta Garibaldi" is one of the gates into the city of Marsala.  Originally, it was called the "sea gate" because as the name suggests, it overlooked the sea.  It was built in 1685 at the request of the King of Spain in defense of the city.  It replaced the previous one that is now in ruins.

The gate took its name after the landing of Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860 with the advent of the unification of Italy.

In the upper part of the gate we find a crowned eagle, the symbol of the Habsburg family of Spain. On the sides of it, we find aedicule inlets that must have housed statues in the past.  On the inside, we find a large atrium surmounted by a large lamppost.  This is where voice spreads throughout the area.

If you are proceeding towards the sea, you will reach the monument that is dedicated to the thousand landing.  The first idea of the monument was imagined in 1860, but the work began only in 1986, after the architect, Mongiovì, won the competition for the project.  The work was completed on May 11, 2016.
