"San Pietro" e la storia su Garibaldi

Near the historic center is the Civic Museum of Marsala.  It is in the monumental complex of San Pietro. This museum, established in 1998, is divided into three sections:

  1. The first is archaeological, where there are exhibits dating back to the period in which our present day Marsala was called "Lilibeo," and a large part of the collection are manuscripts of the Marsala librarian, Salvatore Struppa.
  2. In addition to this important branch of the museum, we also have the section reserved for popular traditions. This includes an exhibition dedicated to the procession of the Holy Thursday in Marsala, and to the work of Sicilian puppets.
  3. The third section of the Civic Museum is entirely dedicated to the enterprise of the thousand and their landing in Marsala, and to General Garibaldi.

The Monastery of St. Peter has origins dating back to the sixth century, when the Marsala noble, Adeodata, had the Monastery built at her own expense.  Some time later, the Dominicans ceded the rooms of their convent to the Benedictines, expanding the structure of the building with the construction of the part overlooking via XI Maggio.
