A palace with a noble heart

Today, the seat of the municipal art gallery and one of the most interesting institutional collections of the 1900s, is Grignani Palace.  It is one of the noble hearts of the city.  The palace is also called "Grignani," because the spelling of its name has changed over the centuries. At the end of the 1700s, the Marquis of Villabianca had already described the residence of Count Grignano: overlooking Piazza del Carmine, next to the ancient convent of the Carmelite friars, and to the church of the Madonna Annunziata - and the particular octagonal bell tower.  When the nearby Cappasanta died out, the Count also absorbed their palace and created a huge residence (while saving the two distinct facades) with a luxuriant internal garden of vines, apple trees, figs and pomegranates.

Today the palace is home to the names of Guccione, Sarnari, Sughi, Sironi, Lia Pasqualino Noto, and the artists of the Forma Group (Accardi, Consagra, Sanfilippo).  Among are the most interesting pieces, "I Naufraghi" by Cagnaccio di San Pietro (1934), and the installation, "Landing in Marsala" that was commissioned to Emilio Isgrò.
