The remains of a fortress

The Bastion is an integral part of the fortification works of the city of Marsala.  It was carried out during the Spanish domination. The construction was commissioned by Viceroy Vega, occurred in 1551, providing for the reconstruction of the damaged walls.  The construction of the four bastions are at the corners of the city as well as the four bulwarks near the access gates.

The Bastion of San Francesco is preserved almost intact over time.  It is devoid of only the other earlobe that protrudes towards the convent with the same name, and that was demolished in 1891.  This was to allow the opening of Via A. Diaz.
